You’ve probably seen them in Halloween stores and in online ads, all sorts of fun and spooky looking contacts to complete the look of a costume, whether you want to be a red-eyed vampire or create the illusion of cat-eyes. But are they worth the trouble?
In many cases, the answer is actually no.
Unless you’re getting fitted for them at your local eye doctor, they can actually damage your eyes and permanently ruin your vision. And we won’t even get started on the potential for bacterial infections and other nasty things that can happen.
If you absolutely must have a pair of contacts for your costume, call up your eye doctor. They sell costume lenses too, and they’ll be properly fitted to the shape of your eye. They even have disposable wear-once-and-get-a-fresh-pair types in many decorative colors and styles, so you won’t have to worry about infections or other icky things. They even prescription lenses available in some of the decorative styles so if you’re already a contact wearer you can order them in your actual prescription (so you can look great and still be able to see!)
