Lisbeth Salander, Computer Hacker with a Unique Punk Look
The truth of the matter is that Lisbeth is a strong female lead character in a book series (and now movie series) devoured end enjoyed by millions. There are two movies – so many people were watching the first movie with English subtitles that an English version of the movie was created. Fans of the story series frequently debate which movie is better and which best depicts their favorite characters.
You Can’t Walk Into a Halloween Store and Buy This Costume!Even with the popularity of the books and the movies, this isn’t a costume you can walk into a Spirit Halloween Shop in early October to purchase. It’s just not there. You have to get creative! Lisbeth has a very unique style, so this is a really fun look to create. (And if the Halloween party you’re going to this year is literary character themed this could be absolutely perfect!)
Lisbeth is a strong female presence on screen, she’s a tough chic with a creative punk style. She lives alone and her life has been rough in more ways than one and it shows – in a good way, she’s beautiful and fascinating in every way.
Make Your Own Lisbeth Salander Halloween Costume
Basic Clothing for the Base of the Costume
You can probably find a lot of this part of the costume in your closet (or raid your teenager’s closet) or even find some of it inexpensively at a local thrift shop.
Start with a pair of skinny pants, (you can get for cotton, leather, or denim) black or grey will probably work well.
Get an old black t-shirt and cut off the sleeves and fray the edges a bit.
Add a black jacket and you’re almost ready to go! ~ you can wear a short leather jacket or a black hooded sweatshirt type of jacket, up to you (and your weather report for the night)
Accessorize! This is the fun part of being Lisbeth for Halloween
Time to pull out your big black boots!
Personally, I wear my big black combat boots all year round, but that’s just me. Some people hide them in the back of their closet like a dark secret that they only pull out in October. If you’re hiding a pair in your closet now is the time to bring them out and show them some love (but don’t polish them, they don’t need to look new for this particular occasion)
If you don’t have a pair of big black boots you can ask to borrow a pair from a friend, check thrift shops, or pick up an inexpensive pair.
Hair, Hair, Hair – It’s all about the hair…
Okay, so it’s not *really* all about the hair, but Lisbeth’s hair is an identifying factor so you might want to spend more time here than on clothing.
Depending on how long your own hair is you can slick it up into a faux mohawk style for an easy solution, or you can go with a wig for a faster solution. Lisbeth wears her hair in two different styles in the movie, so you could purchase a short wig and trim it so the bangs are very short, then trim so that one side of the wig is shorter than the other to create the asymmetrical cut most people identify with as being Lisbeth’s hairstyle.
Again, you’re going to have to be creative and start with a regular wig purchase and trim it to be the way you want it. There is no “Lisbeth wig style” that you can go pick up at the store.
Pierce It! But not for real…
Lisbeth has some very obvious piercings that you can recreate with magnetic and clip on styles that will look realistic.
There are plenty of not-a-real-piercing styles that you can pick up to recreate the look of eyebrow piercings, lip piercings, and nose piercings. Some of them might even fool your friends into thinking you’ve gone all out for your costume look and done the real thing. Don’t forget the earrings too!
A Crush with Eyeliner….
So ignore my random R.E.M quote there and let’s think for a moment. Lisbeth doesn’t wear a lot of makeup, so the only thing you really need in the makeup department is some black eyeliner. You likely have that in your makeup bag already 😉
If you want to wear something on your lips go for a neutral pale flesh tone color or clear lip gloss or lip protectant, nothing too much needed there. Remember, Lisbeth has her own style and there’s no room for a bulky makeup bag when you’re chasing bad guys and solving mysteries.
Of Course there are Tattoos to Think About…
As the story title suggests, Lisbeth has tattoos. However, your costume is likely going to cover most of the areas that those would normally show. If you want to, you can get temporary tattoos or tattoo sleeves. Place a few temporary tattoos in places that are going to be noticeable, like your hand or neck.
